Muzzling vs Code of Silence

Oh, for Conservatives it's muzzling, but for Liberals it's a code of silence.

From the always non bias, non partisan Jane Tabor, Globe and Mail,

Liberals impose code of silence on Ross Rebagliati

Peter Donolo and his new crew running Michael Ignatieff’s office have, according to The Globe this morning, made over the Liberal Leader’s office.

Mr. Donolo, the new chief of staff, has staff members addressing the leader now as “Mr. Ignatieff” rather than the more informal “Michael” as his old crew used to. Staffers in the Opposition Leader’s Office are also being asked to dress up a little bit more.

What the team neglected to tell our reporter is that it seems a code of silence has been imposed along with that dress code. Indeed, they suggested to one of their new B.C. candidates, former Olympian Ross Rebagliati, that he not to talk to the news media.

The best approach for Harper to take

Mr. Harper seems to know that. He took special care during the election campaign to muzzle the fringe elements of his party. He must be careful now to make sure they do not take the election win as an endorsement of their views. When he is making his cabinet, he would be wise to give leading spots to moderate MPs from the old Progressive Conservative Party. He would be even wiser to put off for now his notion of holding a new vote on same-sex marriage. Courts across the country have made it legal and Parliament has already voted once to do the same. Risking a clash with the courts over rights and restarting a divisive debate on social values is not something Mr. Harper should contemplate if he wants to be a unifying centrist prime minister.

Canada Takes On Leadership Role

Our PM and his government are not letting grass grow under their feet. One week from today, Monday January 25, in Montreal, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon will host an international meeting on rebuilding Haiti. (h/t) Globe and Mail
"Canada will host an emergency meeting in Montreal next Monday of countries that are leading the rescue effort in Haiti, as world leaders struggle to craft a longer-term plan for rebuilding the stricken nation.

Lawrence Cannon, Canada's Foreign Minister, hosted a teleconference yesterday afternoon that included U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and their counterparts from several Latin American countries, along with Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.

As a key player in Friends of Haiti, an informal group of governments and organizations that has been working to improve the situation in Haiti since the early 1990s, Canada is playing a major role in co-ordinating the global response.'

That along with all the other relief efforts Canada is doing from just hours after the earthquake occured, is in my mind impressive. That's leadership.

Let's not forget the folk in Haiti and keep doing everything we can. Keep them in your hearts and prayers. There is still a lot of suffering going on and we must continue to help.

BTW - This summit on Monday Jan. 25 is the same day as the Liberals are ordered back to work on the Hill. Stay tuned it'll be an interesting day.

Does the NATO Chief Think Canadian Troops Are War Criminals?

What does the NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen have to say about the Canadian troops and/or the government being involved in war crimes as the Liberals and some in the Lame Stream Media have alleged?
This from the NATO chief himself when he was in Canada meeting with the Prime Minister on Wednesday. (h/t) National Post

Safeguards against Afghan torture in place, NATO chief says

OTTAWA -- NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says Canadians should not be concerned about treatment of Afghan detainees because rules and practices are in place to prevent and stop abuse.

In an interview Wednesday with Canwest News Service he was asked if Canadians should be concerned about a risk of torture of detainees transferred to Afghan authorities by Canadian Forces -- a topic that dominated the political debate before the government prorogued Parliament.

"Obviously it is a very important topic," he said. "But I don't think Canadians in general should be concerned about it because there are very clear rules regarding the handover of detainees."

He said the rules governing transfer of detainees from NATO forces to Afghan authorities provide for them to be handed over within 96 hours and to inform the Red Cross.

What ya got to say about that, Liberals and CBC, TorStar, G&M, CTV etc.?

It's pretty clear to me. Our troops and government are NOT involved in committing war crimes.

The Harper Government Responds

The Harper government is on the job responding to the terrible tragedy that happened yesterday in Haiti. (h/t, Jane Tabor, Globe and Mail)

The Canadian government is pledging $5-million immediately to help

International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda announced the measure this morning on a conference call with reporters. Ms. Oda also said the Canadian government, through the Red Cross, is working with the Norwegian government on a field hospital.

She said the immediate need is to “support the first responders” on the scene and to ensure the safety of all Canadians there. She said there was some damage at the Canadian embassy, but so far there are no reports of any Canadian deaths.

Within 30 minutes of the first reports of the earthquake in Haiti, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon and Defence Minister Peter MacKay and their officials were beginning to plan Canada’s response.

Media Where Are You?

I have one question for the media. Why are you giving John McCallum a free pass?
Yesterday Liberal MP John McCallum in an interview with CBC accuses our troops of war crimes.
Since then virtually nothing in the Lame Stream Media on this. Once again the blogs have to do their job for them.

Bluelikeyou.

Where are you MSM? Nothing to see here folks, let's move on. Had this been a Conservative MP, every media outlet would have been on it like a dog with a bone within hours. It would be getting huge headlines.

Oh no there's no bias. The silence is deafening.

Pathetic. See why more people are turning to blogs and the internet to get their information?
