Dave Rutherford-1, Wayne Doorknob Easter-0

A must listen! Dave Rutherford interviewed Wayne Doorknob Easter this morning on his show about patronage appointments. Dave really gave Easter a good smack-down. You can listen right here. Click on 10:00AM then scroll to 35:03.

He says Stephen Harper is the worst PM for patronage appointments. Dave got him on Liberal patronage and Easter said Liberals weren't that bad. Yeah right! Dave points out that PM Harper's patronage appointments are 20% compared to Chretien's patronage appointments at 50%. Dave then points out that our Ambassador to the US, former Manitoba Premier, Gary Doer is an NDP. Then Doorknob goes on to admit that PM Harper has actually made some pretty good appointments. Easter is one of the biggest hypocrites that's for sure. Dave did a really good job putting Easter in his place. Wish we had more journalists that would give Easter a good smack-down like that.

Liberal patronage appointments-good

Conservative patronage appointments-bad

Heads up , Dave Rutherford has been called to testify at the Industry Committee tomorrow about the long form census. I think he said around 9:30AM EST.   He has no clue why just that he's been called. Should be interesting.

Go and read more that's related to this topic from fellow blogger.  (h/t) Paulsstuff

  1. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking Rutherford read my blog post from yesterday:

  3. Did Harper not try to set up an appointments process when first elected and the Chair was shot down by the opposition despite the fact that he was going to do it for $1.00 a year. It was the former executive of Encana and I can't recall his name. So instead of getting the process started the opposition elected to play politics and therefore Harper has not tried to set up the appointments committee again.

  4. I bet your blog was part of Rutherford's research on the patronage issue,
    good stuff Paulstuff...!!

something Rutherford missed was when PMSH tried to keep the appointment commission promise:

''Prime Minister Stephen Harper scrapped his public appointments commission Tuesday after MPs were accused of conducting a "partisan political lynching" of Gwyn Morgan, the Calgary oilman who agreed to serve as volunteer chief of the patronage watchdog office...''

  5. Dave has ranted a few times about the long form survey. He refused to fill it out in 2006, and so might be asked about that experience. Plus, almost all the callers to his show have been against the mandatory long form.

Right,I remember that now that you mention it. The opposition cannot complain the PM broke a promise because he did try. They only have themselves to blame. They shot down a very good and fairminded candidate for the job.

  7. Thanks for that link to the Rutherford interview with Wayne Easter.

Too bad, though, that Rutherford didn't remind Easter about the Appointments Commission that Easter kept insisting the PM had not lived up to. I guess both of them forgot about the PM appointing Gwyn Morgan to head that Appointments Commission for the princely salary of ONE dollar a year, but the MPs in the committee considering his candidacy for the position branded him a "bigot" so that was the end of that position.

I distinctly recall the PM being visibly angry at someone of Mr. Morgan's caliber being subjected to such treatment. I also recall Jane Taber opening her QP interview with Mr. Morgan with the question "Are you a bigot?"

Getting back to the Rutherford interview ... he also allowed Easter to distance himself from the Liberal patronage appointments, when during the first three minutes of the interview Easter says: "I'm not denying what the Liberals did in THEIR time ..." THEIR time? He's been an MP since 1993! He was part & parcel of the Chretien/Martin years!

  14. Guys, just email David and inform him to remind the public of the guy who was willing to work for $1 a year, but the opposition parties refuse.

Another thing just recently the prime minister said to his folks elect your senator and I will appoint them for you. But nooooooo, the provinces do not want to do so- so when a vacant seat comes he has no choice but to appoint them himself.
Futhermore, PM made a deal with a few appointed senators of his, that when their province decides to institute an election for their senators, the appointed senators are to step down to run in the election. Pamela Wallin is one of them. she will step down if and when Sask decides to have campaign to elect their own senator.

    re: census
Has coalition forgotten that institutions and organizations don't vote, people do?
The groups identified as least likely to fill in the long form census are low income, minorities and Natives.
So, yah wanna bring back penalties for the long form census, eh...

    Government response:
“It is blatantly outrageous that this (Michael) Ignatieff spokesman asserts that minorities and the poor should be threatened with financial fines and jail time in order to fill out the long form census,” said Mr. Soudas.

The Liberals “constantly look down on working class people and think they aren't as civic minded as liberal elites,” he said. “We believe that freedom is an essential Canadian value, and we don't think that it is right to try to frighten or intimidate people into surrendering huge amounts of private information to the government.”

  16. The liberals really think that David is a sucker like Tom Clark, Trudeau Oliver, Taber, Wayne actually thought that David was some lamebrain fool who does nothing but bows to every move the conservatives makes.
Wayne thinks David was some neocon knuckle dragger hillbilly from the wild west cowtown that milk cows all day and ride a buggy was going to be a breeze to talk too.

I think Wayne Doorknob Easter was kinda surprised that Dave called him out like he did.
