Liberals Pine for Ole Days

Libluvin columnist Larry Martin, speculates the Libs are pining for the "good ole Chretien days." Probably, but the way writes his column, I think he is the one that 's pining.
It’s Jean Chretien’s day today.
The old warrior’s portrait, which is to be hung in the halls of Parliament, will be unveiled in a ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper tonight.
A safe bet is there will be a lot of Liberals in attendance wishing Chretien was still around.
“Ah, the good old days.” That will be the phrase on everyone’s lips as his three straight majority election victories are recalled.
His legacy is getting better with time, particularly on account of what has happened since he stepped down in 2003. The once-proud party has staggered ever since. Paul Martin won a minority and then was defeated. Stéphane Dion took over and the party declined further. Michael Ignatieff replaced him and the party’s latest poll standing is at 25 per cent.
Yeah right, pine for HRDC  boondoggles, Shawinigate, Adscam, decade of darkness for the military, treat farmers like criminals. and "the culture of entitlement"

The Chretien good ole days? "Da little guy from Shawinigan" who throttles an innocent protester almost to death.  Yeah right! What a legacy!  Good ole days for Liberanos not for Canada.

More fond rememberance.
One piece of encouragement Chretien will be able to provide is a reference to his own experience. He served as opposition leader for three years and had a terrible time almost every step of the way...and won.
Another sign of hope is that the party’s major opponent isn’t exactly setting the world on fire
Larry your party isn't exactly exciting the population either. Your leader is a dud.  All your party has to offer is muckraking trying to drum up faux scandals.  And oh, Larry, btw, good ole Chretien faced a very fractured right.
It's not the '90's anymore. The world has changed. Larry, you're living in the past. Time to get with the times. The population is getting older and more conservative. Apparently Larry hasn't heard what Stephane Dion's wife, Janine Kreiber has said about the state of Libranos.
The Liberal Party is falling apart, and will not recover. Like all liberal parties in Europe, it will become a weakling at the mercy of ephemeral coalitions. By refusing the historic coalition that would have placed it at the helm of the left, it will be punished by history.
Larry Martin might as well face it, the Libranos will not be the powerful force it once was in the forseeable future if a at all anymore. I don't see the Libs getting enough seats to even get a small minority never mind a majority. They would have to gain at least 50 seats. I don't know where they would get those.  Where as the Conservatives only need 10 to 12 more seats for majority. That is very doable.

A coalition with the NDP will form enough seats to govern, they would have to include the Bloc and Canadians will not tolerate that at all.
So get used to Conservatives in government for the foreseeable future.

  1. The Liberal Party has been in opposition for over 4 years and can't come up with any policy that doesn't require an increase in taxes or increase in payment to the government.

Their last victory against a united Conservative front came on the promise (big fat lie) of cutting taxes. Until the Liberals shift fiscally to the right, they will forever be the official opposition.

  2. Always remember CHRETIEN and BROADBENT started the COALITION FIASCO and will try at it again.

BTW frmgrl, I do not know if you are aware of this. On saturday may 22,2010, in the national post, showed of the four leaders the prime minister is the most frugal in spending than Layton who spent the more. and he lives close by.

frmgrl, you will notice that Ignatieff is not there, gee, all those book tours paid for by?
What about the liberal mps who still owe EC thousands of dollars?
Also, CBC, YEP not only are to open their books but CBC as well as well as we pay for that place; we want their books to be wide open to the public. because really, the crap CBC put on etc, surely does not cost billions. What I think is that, they come up with an excuse that it cost billions when in fact is cost next to nothing.

Anony, I think you're right. Heck could we even see the Dippers become the official opposition at some point the way the Libs are going?

Yeah, what's with that? Why aren't the media talking heads asking questions? At the same time they're making a big thing of the PM promoting the stimulus. Go figure!
The PM I believe does take into account that it is our money he's spending thus he's careful in how it's spent. I rather like that.

  5. ''..He served as opposition leader for three years and had a terrible time almost every step of the way...and won.''

Yah he won, by out and out being a liar.

Chretien campaigned on killing the GST and killing the Free Trade deal with the US.

Even his own MPs believed him.
Remember Sheila Copps put her seat on the line, said of Chretien didn't kill the GST, she would resign.
    Copps resigned.
Then Chretien signed the Free Trade deal,
    without hesitation nor amendment.

Dion tried 'the big lie' with his Coalition of Losers stunt in 2008, Chretien's advice didn't work out so good for him tho.

  6. Observation from Wildrose Country - get rid of Ignatieff - allow him to take an evening stroll in the green wood with his favourite French wine in hand. Liberals need to come up with policies and visions that the Canadian electrolate can embrace - until then its all MSM moaning 24/7. The Liberal Party of Toronto is not listening. Cheers.

  7. Just on Power and Politics, Solomon asks Chretien about talks with the NDP and a united left (like CA and PC ), Chretien said
'if it's doable, let's do it'.....

Chretien also says his advice to the LPC is to win the next election (but said nothing about stealing govt with a coalition of losers except that it didn't work out in 2008),
says in 2000 he asked Rae and Romanow to join the LPC , and that when he was first elected PM a senior Liberal said he should unite the left, saying maybe it was a mistake to no have done so.

    let the games begin

wilson, if they get together, blue liberals I believe will flee to the CPC. So the CPC will benefit. Sad, once a successful powerful party reduced to this.

  9. What a decade, eh frmgl! No PC and looks like LPC and NDP heading into extinction too.

There are Dippers who will not accept being a permanent attachment to the Liberal butt too.

    What will the Greenies do?
Maybe they will pick up disaffected Dippers and Libs.... only to join the LibDippers anyways.

Yiks, who would lead such a motley crew?

  10. I think Mr. Ziffy must feel so diminished by all this. He's used to being the one in the spotlight.
