The Toxic Atmosphere on Parliament Hill

I like many  have been appalled lately at the behavior of  MPs on the Hill who are supposed to be "Honorable Members." Well they haven't been so honorable the last few weeks.  It has developed into what L.Ian Macdonald describes as toxic.and it's mostly over procedural stuff that most Canadians outside the Ottawa bubble care little about.  Yes the government needs to be held accountable but the focus should be on the issues that affect the everyday lives of regular Canadians.

The Conservatives are no angels either. Please pay attention! Yes even though so far none of this muck has stuck and the polls look good, it's no time for the Conservatives to go into stupid mode and get arrogant and cocky.because you never know what may happen.  A little bit of humility might be in order.  The public responds more positively to humility.  Arrogance turns people off.

What to about it?  Well maybe an election would be the solution to sort things out, I don't know but it has to be a majority either way. Either a Conservative majority or a majority with the Lib/Dipper/Bloc coalition.

BTW. These goings on in Ottawa pales in significance compared to what's going on in Japan today with horrific earthquake and tsunami. My heart and prayers are with the Japanese people today.

  1. or a majority with the Lib/Dipper/Bloc coalition.

The solution to sort things out??? You have to be kidding. The Block running Canada with Iggy as Prime Minister and Layton as what? And a senate full of that bunch? Democracy? OMG.Its bad enough now whats going on with witch hunt committees abusing their powers and all the other rot going on with the Coalition and the media. I watch every Question Period in the HOC and the Conservatives are saints compaired to the other gang who are acting like rabbitt dogs with a bone. When there is an answer the coalition don't like the CPC get drowned out.The speaker doesn't even use "order" anymore...he is just letting it go. The media just want to change the channel away from the economy, because the CPC have done a stellar job with it and I will never sing any praises for the senanigans of the Coalition. The economy is why the Conservatives are IN and the shananigans and games are why the opposition are OUT.

  2. I don't want a Lib/Dip/Bloc coalition anymore that you do but Anony, either a Conservative majority or coalition will be the choice. PMSH has already pointed out. The CPC will campaign on that. Canadians will have to choose. Just sayin'

  3. These procedural fights are the inevitible result of a minority Parliament where the ruling Party has no natural allies.

Or look at it this way: PM Harper has found a way to get much of his legislation passed, and to stay in power for over five years. The Opps have had to swallow a lot. So, to even the score, they push back where they have the upper hand--in Committees.

IMHO, these back and forth "debates" are not that big of a deal--our democracy certainly is nowhere near being in any kind of danger.

I agree that we don't want to come across as being arrogant--I've seen too many examples of voters punishing politicians for that. I think PM Harper, as seen in yesterday's press conference, is striking the right tone.

I agree,CJ but they still must be careful. We're living in 15second sound bite world.

  5. The Harper Government can, rightly, focus on the economy AND continue/propose policy on accountability and transparency.

If the Opps are not co-operating with MP Chong's proposals on House civility, let's hear about it.
When did that committee last meet?

And why are we having an unneccesary election? so as Liberals can dump their leader?
Come on Jack! This is stupid, and NOT getting things done.
    Opposition parties:
Quit the 'I hate Harper' games and get to work!
