What Is New Alberta Premier,Alison Redford Afraid Of?

Our newly elected Premier Alison Redford, the one who would bring change is cancelling the fall sitting of the Legislature.  MLA's are not going to be showing up for work for nine months.  The fall sitting was scheduled to begin Oct. 25,
CALGARY, AB (October 2, 2011): Wildrose House Leader Rob Anderson said Premier-designate Alison Redford’s decision to shut down debate in the Legislature shows that all the talk about change was just that…talk.
At a press conference today, Redford said she will cancel the planned fall sitting of the Legislature, scheduled to begin Oct. 25.
“Ms. Redford claims she is all about change, but within 12 hours of being crowned Premier, she announces she is shutting down the Legislature for nine months so she can avoid facing the opposition in the people’s democratically elected House,” Anderson said. “It was bad enough that she and her Cabinet colleagues voted themselves a big pay raise, now she and her caucus colleagues aren’t  even going to bother to show up for work for nine months.”
Anderson also called for a specific date for the next election and a commitment to call and complete a public inquiry into the intimidation of health workers prior to that election date. Redford refused today to do either.
“The Wildrose is ready to have a debate on ideas and the future of this province – why isn’t she? The new Premier needs to get back to work and face the people’s representatives,” Anderson said. “If this is the change we can expect from her, perhaps she should call an election right now and let Albertans decide if it is the change they actually want.”

Is she afraid of scrutiny? Is she afraid of facing the opposition? Redford has promised $100 million will be re-instated into education within days, this without debate in the Ledge. Where is that money coming from? We're in deficit. Without the Legislature in session what else will she do without facing Albertan's elected representives?

She should set a date for an election asap so all Albertan's can decide To quote Wildrose MLA Rob Anderson,“If this is the change we can expect from her, perhaps she should call an election right now and let Albertans decide if it is the change they actually want.”

  1. Prorologuing parliament already?

Redford realizes that she only won the leadership since stelmach is stepping down but she faces upcoming Alberta election next year. So really it is not a 'done deal' for her.

Ralph was a liberal or red tory premier but ran this province like a conservative. He love his province more to do whatever it takes to survive from the debt downfall.
Dalton is no Ralph nor does he love ontario that's for sure.

WRA, is watching every move she makes that must scare Redford.

  3. That decision can't sit well with Albertans. We will have 9 months to go after every decision she makes by order in cabinet. What was she thinking.
Time to get a law passed that mlas, leaders etc are only paid for days they show up to work.
Didn't she say she would allow more input from backbenchers, how can they when they are on holiday.
The poor lady run for leader and when she won has realized that now she must be one. Shutting down the govt for 9 months is not the way.
Wonder if that is what the dippers and liberals and union members voted for.

I can tell you one thing, this does not sit well with this Albertan! You bet we'll go after every decision she makes during the next nine months.
This will certainly come up during the election that she's promised that will take place before next June. Danielle Smith will make sure of it.

  6. Unbelievable! I have seen politicians do many self-serving things, but this is the worst.

As the old saying goes, "there oughtta be a law!".

Basically,Albertans are without democratic representation for the next nine months,no politician should have the power to take that away, even temporarily.

I have no problem with a short prorogue,a couple of months or so, but nine months, and NO fall session of the legislature!

That's going way beyond the bounds of political ethics. I hope Albertans anger will simmer for the nine months, and Redford is soundly defeated next year.

  8. BLY is back! Still no sign of Jack's newswatch. Why does this always happen at election time.

Look at the difference between Redford and Dalton she already is under fire whereas Dalton still walks.

Give Alberta this, we have David Rutherford who keeps tabs on the provincial government matter to talk about and, have callers phone in to express their concerns etc.
Whereas...again, the Ontario media remain relatively quiet to Dalton over eco spending.

Can you imagine David on Dalton man, oh man, David would eat for breakfast and the callers, for lunch. Dalton would never beable to survive grueling questions from David and public.

Amen, thank God for Dave! Thanks for the those articles for me to read. It sure looks like we are in for some interesting times in Alberta politics. Between Dave R,Danielle Smith and Wildrose and the blogs,Alison will not get an easy ride.
