Does Canada Have a Christian Heritage?

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  We just celebrated Canada Day/Dominion Day which ever you want to call it. Festivities were held in almost every community across the country celebrating our past, present and future.

Take our past for example.   How much of Canada's history do we really know?  It's important that we know our history, all of it.  The good and the bad.

Some believe Canada started with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the Trudeau era.   That is not true.  Canada started in 1867 and even earlier than that.

We have rich military history, not just as peacekeepers either.

What about our spiritual history? Do we even have one?   Well I bet you didn't know that Canada has a Christian heritage did you?   I bet you weren't taught that in school, were you?  I certainly wasn't.

Look at the preamble of the Charter for instance, "Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law:"

That's not all.  Watch Brian Lilley's interview with Pastor Bill Prankard for some further detail about our Christian heritage.  You need to know this stuff even if you are not a Christian because it's a part of our history whether you like it or not.

  1. The later generations of Canada have purposely been taught the Liberal revisionist version of our history, which explains the wide spread ignorance of our history and heritage. I hope that some day this will be turned around and our history and heritage will be taught again.

As for the question of whether Canada has a Christian heritage, people have to be profoundly ignorant of our history not to know this. Even as a non Christian, I know and have known this. It does not in the least annoy nor bother me that that is the fact, since I know and appreciate that we also have freedom of religion.

    1. I believe when the progressives got a hold of our education system and infiltrated the various levels of government is when the revisionist history started to be promoted.
It wasn't until years later I started to find out the truth. When Glenn Beck was still on Foxnews,he taught the audience the truth about the American history. He taught how the progressives took over started this revisionist propaganda. That inspired me to start finding out the truth about Canada's history. I now feel really ticked that I was not taught the truth when I went to school. I've noticed Sunnews has brought out some of the truth from time to time. They need to do more I think. It's vital we know especially in the times in which we are living right now.

    2. I couldn't agree more about the vital role that SNN is playing. I admit that while I was much more knowledgeable of our true history and heritage than the younger generations, I have learned even more of the truth thanks to SNN. It would be great if they could produce a series on the subject, and perhaps they will in the future.

  2. What revisionist history, exactly are you referring to? Do high school history textbooks get any facts wrong about the John Cabot, The Plains of Abraham, or the CPR? If there's some important aspect of Canadian history I'm missing out on, then I'd like to hear about it to correct the error.

    1. You need to read my post again. I gave you an example. I pointed out for instance, our proud Christian heritage is not taught in our public schools. It wasn't taught when I attended or when my children attended. I attended in the '60's and early '70's, my children, the '80's and'90's.

I would suggest, emceesquared, you go do your own homework. Heck,I have only barely started doing my homework.

  3. I got the idea of proud Christian heritage, but that's not as specific as I had been hoping for. I realize that the first Europeans in Canada were mostly Christians, as were the Fathers of Confederation. Given that, it's fairly obvious that some of the choices made by these people that shaped our country were made based on Christian principles. But this was all taught to me in school. Are there any specific historical events that I should know about that constitute a "proud Christian heritage"? I'm honestly interested to know.

I should also note that Christianity is not our only religious heritage, and that not all of our Christian heritage is proud. The Christian church was, for example, highly involved with residential schools, and I'm not terribly proud of those.

  4. Our heritage is judo-Christian. The preamble of our constitution (drafted by Liberals I might add) refers to the supremacy of god. That goes well beyond just a "Christian" view of the world.

  5. Interesting. I'd heard a different version of how 'Dominion' was attached to Canada, so I googled it. Not to disparage the good pastor, but there are questions as to whether the story of Sir Leonard Tilley is accurate, or a 'patriotic fable'. The version I got was that the British monarch, equally Bible-literate, chose 'Dominion' to describe those colonies which were becoming independent: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

Certainly, the description of lands as 'dominions' is of long standing. And there may well be a connection between the use of 'dominion' and the Biblical passage carved over the doorway. But my late father did comment that Canada was becoming 'post-Christian'; sadly, I agree with him.
